Fernandinho admits he is enjoying being City’s Mr Versatile.

The Brazilian has played a variety of roles for Pep Guardiola this season and against Bournemouth he turned in a superb performance at left-back as the Blues moved to second in the Premier League.

With almost every midfield position played this campaign plus several defensive masterclasses, Ferna admits playing under Pep is something of an education.

“I think left-back is the fourth different role I’ve had this season,” said Ferna.

“It’s a different experience, but very good and interesting. I liked it a lot. The most important thing is to be available to help the team the best way possible.

“Since Pep arrived here he was clear about the fact that he likes to use players in different positions and he made some tests and in the last game when I ended up playing on the right-hand side.

“Against Bournemouth I played on the left. It’s one of his ideas of game, we tried to implement it and I think this is a very important aspect and quality to have.

“To be able to adjust in different positions and try to keep a good rhythm during the match and help the team to win is good for the whole team and as individuals because we broaden our own experience and if there’s a situation we have to slot in somewhere else, we may already know that role well.”

City are still eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea and slightly ahead of the teams battling for Champions League qualification.

But Fernandinho believes despite the fact there still being a sizeable gap between the Blues and Antonio Conte’s side, all the teams in the top six will drop points from time to time – the key is capitalizing on any opportunities that arise.

He said: “Everyone knows how hard is the Premier League, so eight points are not that relevant.

“We still have to face them at their own stadium which is one of those six-pointer type of game and of course everything is possible in the Premier League.

“Teams can drop points and draw so we will carry on expecting that to happen. Unfortunately, our next game in the Premier League is not until the start of March which seems a long time.

“But I think it was important to win against Bournemouth and get an extra three points and jump into the second position.”

The Brazilian also wished his compatriot Gabriel Jesus a speedy recovery, adding: “He was treading badly with his right foot, but we will see what the doctors will say. We are all hoping it was nothing serious and hopefully he can come back as soon as possible.
