Over the course of the season, you’ll be hearing from our history makers.
These are the people that were there for those moments, the ones that shaped our history but we didn’t always know it, part of our DNA, chapters in our story.
Just like former City goalkeeper and City in the Community Ambassador, Alex Williams MBE.
Let’s hear it for our first history maker…Alex Williams MBE
City in the Community started back in 1986, and we were one of six clubs selected by the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) to deliver a dedicated programme of community projects.
This Club changed my life. After more than 120 appearances for Manchester City as a goalkeeper, I retired from football and started my job with City in the Community so I could use the same football club that changed my life to make a positive impact on the lives of other local Manchester people.
Working at the Club was a dream come true for me. I was born in Moss side, a stone’s throw away from the old Maine Road stadium, and I’ve always been a lifelong Man City fan.
From our humble beginning’s in the house next to our former and late groundsman Stan Gibson, we have evolved into one of the most successful community schemes in the country.
Using the power of football and the brand of the Club, we have been able to impact on thousands of young peoples’ lives for an incredible 30 years.
Having said all of this, we would not be where we are today without support from our key partners in particular, the Premier League, the PFA, and of course Man City FC.
Finally, what am I most proud of, I suppose it is everywhere we go as a team, the praise we all receive and the comments made about our outstanding work and the difference we have made, and are making to young peoples’ lives.
Long may our success continue, off and on the field!
Alex Williams MBE
